The Senate passed a motion today acknowledging the findings of the inquiry into the National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020, delivered to the Parliament last week.
The motion, put forward by Labor, asked that the Senate to note:

i.          That Australia is not likely to reach its 2020 goal (National Road Safety Strategy 2011-20) of reducing road death & injuries by at least 30 per cent relative to the baseline 2008-10 figures, and that in the 2018/19 budget the target only reached 14.1 per cent;
ii.         the release of the report into the Inquiry into the National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 conducted by Associate Professor Jeremy Woolley and Dr John Crozier;
iii.        that on current trend by 2030, 12,000 people could be killed, 360,000 injured and at a cost of more than $300 billion nationally according to the report;
iv.        the need for Road Safety to be made a priority issue for Commonwealth, State and Local Governments; and
v.         that even one single death or injury on our roads is unacceptable.
vi.        calls on the Government to work with Parliament to make our roads, vehicles and users safe.

Bipartisan support for the report is a reflection of the approach that the Government and Federal Labor plan to maintain to deal with this very important issue, an issue that affects all Australians.

One death on our roads is one too many and it is clear, that we must lift our game to keep all road users safe.

Federal Labor would like to acknowledge the hard work of the co-authors of the inquiry, Associate Professor Jeremy Woolley, Director of the Centre for Automotive Safety Research at the University of Adelaide, and Dr John Crozier, Chair of the Trauma Committee at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, as well as National President of the Australasian College of Road Safety, Mr Lauchlan McIntosh, and CEO of the International Road Assessment Program, Rob McInerney who assisted the inquiry as advisers.

Federal Labor looks forward to reviewing the Governments response to the inquiry.
